The Last Generation

Thirty years ago I went to South River, NC where I began photographing The Last Generation of shrimpers in my family.

I didn’t know what the future would hold, but I knew my uncles would be the last to shrimp.

They came to Virginia and North Carolina in the 1600s. Farmers, hunters and fishermen they began to settle in the South River area around 1707. Seven generations later, that way of life has disappeared.

South River will never be the same.

This is a time gone by.
